What To Stream In July, From Movies To TV Shows

July might be the month for big blockbusters and big screens, but there’s plenty to get stuck into on streaming as well. Netflix has two big shows returning in The Lincoln Layer and The Witcher, and critically acclaimed The Bear is returning on Disney+. There’s also some exciting movies coming to Netflix and Apple TV+, so read on to find out what’s worth your time to stream in July.
The Lincoln Lawyer – Season 2 Part 1

The Lincoln Lawyer was something of a surpise hit last year- a new TV version of the 00s book series wasn’t what most people had in mind as a big ratings draw, but the legal drama shot up to become one of Netflix’s biggest shows of 2022. Back for season 2 (which will be split into two parts, we find Mickey (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo) branching out and continuing his out-of-car legal services. Season 2 will adapt the fourth book in the original series by Michael Connelly, The Fifth Lawyer. Having achieved some success (and fame) by the end of the last season, Mickey is newly confident and certainly back on the road (literally and figuratively) after battling addiction. But that kind of success can be an issue, and Mickey might not stay out of trouble for long.

Bird Box Barcelona

Everyone remembers Bird Box and the social media craze that followed it. Sandra Bullock’s creepy thriller became a massive hit for Netflix, so a sequel seemed likely, but no one heard about it until it was suddenly announced by the streaming giant a few weeks ago. Bird Box Barcelona isn’t a direct sequel (Sandra Bullock isn’t back), but instead a “spin off sequel” that’s set in the Spanish city with a new set of characters. Spanish actor Mario Casas plays the lead role of Sebastian, a father caught up in the apocalyptic events that preceded the first movie. He and his daughter Anna (Alejandra) desperately team up with other survivors in order to survive- but soon discover that the only way to live is to remain blindfolded when near the mysterious entities that now roam Earth.

The Witcher – Season 3 Volume 1 and 2

The Witcher’s third season is an oddity: it was announced before the new set of episodes arrived on Netflix that star Henry Cavill would be leaving the series and ditching his silver sword. In his place, Liam Hemsworth is set to don a grey wig to play legendary Witcher Geralt, but until then we’ve still got eight hours of Cavill’s Geralt before he exits. The season is (like a lot of Netflix shows nowadays) being spilt into two parts- by the time you read this Part 1 will have released at the tail end of June on the 29th, and Part 2 on 27th July. Geralt and co. are back for more monster hunting, and the Witcher now has to raise and protect Princess Cirilla of Cintra (or Ciri) from those pursuing her. You can also expect a more emotional, less tough-guy Geralt in this season, letting his guard down and showing less ambiguity.

Good Omens – Season 2

Aziraphale and Crowley are finally back: Good Omen’s second season hits Amazon this month, with a whole new series of entanglements with the forces of heaven and hell. Season one adapted the entirety of Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s beloved novel, so Season two will be taking inspiration from their ideas for a sequel that never was. This time around, the angel and demon are forced to deal with Archangel Gabriel (Jon Hamm) arriving on Earth with no memory of who he is or how he got there. In the meantime, trouble is brewing in Heaven and Hell, with the leaders of both realms trying to track down the Archangel for their own desires. They might have prevented Armageddon, but our heroes aren’t quite done yet.

The Bear – Season 2

The much critically raved about The Bear returns for Season two, after Season one blew everyone away with its acting and intense drama. We find Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) helping to set up his newly established restaurant, The Bear, following the closure of his late brother’s sandwich shop at the end of last season. Stress is still the name of the game here: Carmy might’ve pulled together a talented kitchen team to get things off the ground, but a new establishment comes with its own challenges. Fan favourite characters like Sydney (Ayo Edebiri) and Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) will be back to be explored further, and there’s exciting cameos from both Olivia Colman and Bob Odenkirk as whole new characters.

The Beanie Bubble

Remember Beanie Babies? Apple does, which is why they’ve teamed up with OK GO frontman Damian Kulash and his wife Kristin Gore to direct The Beanie Bubble, a comedy drama movie about the stuffed toys that everyone went crazy for. The wide-eyed Beanie Babies became a massive fad in the late 90s as collectors in the US and around the world rushed to buy them up, and became a sensation in the early days of eBay. The Beanie Bubble, which features a cast that includes Zach Galifianakis, Elizabeth Banks, Sarah Snook and Geraldine Viswanathan, tells the story of how the Ty Inc company behind them made Beanie Babies artificially scarce to drive up prices, creating “the Beanie Baby bubble”. Galifiianakis stars as billionaire Ty Inc. founder Ty Warner, who was later convicted for tax evasion.
