We’re already halfway through the year, and June looks to be the most jam-packed month yet when it comes to screening. There’s the return of Sex and The City followup And Just Like That…, a new psychological thriller starring Tom Holland, fascinating documentaries and the arrival of 2023’s most controversial series yet. The Best New Shows To Stream This June

The Crowded Room

Tom Holland stars opposite Amanda Seyfried in this psychological thriller, set in 1970s New York. Danny Sullivan (Holland), a young man with a troubled past, is arrested for his involvement in a deadly shooting. Seyfried plays Rya Goodwin, the person tasked with interrogating and interviewing him, and starts peeling away his psychological layers. Based on the 1981 novel The Minds of Billy Milligan, it’s brought to the screen by Akiva Goldsman (writer of A Beautiful Mind) and is Holland’s first TV acting role since Wolf Hall in 2015. Emmy Rossum, Sasha Lane, Will Chase and Lior Raz also star.

Based On A True Story

Everyone loves true crime, but Ava Bartlett (Kaley Cuoco) and Chris Messina (Nathan Bartlett) love it a bit too much. Our two protagonists decide to cash in on the true-crime podcast craze and start to investigate the apparent murder of their neighbour. With both concerned about how to make ends meet with a baby on the way, Ava thinks she knows who the killer is, but her plan to turn into an amateur sleuth starts going seriously wrong. She and Chris begin drifting into illegal and immoral territory, and the West Side Killer might be around any corner. The show also stars Tom Bateman, Liana Liberato, Priscillia Quintana, Natalie Dyer and Li Jun Li.

The Perfect Find

Looking for a new romcom? The Perfect Find centres on Jenna Jones (Gabrielle Union), a woman recently fired from a high-profile job as a fashion designer. Desperate for work, she accepts a role as a beauty journalist for a popular magazine- but finds herself out of the frying pan and into the fire when she realises her boss is her longtime rival and frenemy Darcy (Gina Torres). Everything’s set up for some comedic workplace clashes, and things get even worse when Jenna meets and falls for the company’s videographer Eric (Keith Powers), who is also Darcy’s son. Whether she can possibly reconcile both is a difficult question. Based on Tia Williams’ book of the same name, it also features La La Anthony, Aisha Hinds, Remy Ma and Ts Madison, and is directed by Numa Perrier.

I’m A Virgo 

Amazon’s oddball new series is one to watch if you’re a fan of surreal comedy. I’m A Virgo focuses on Cootie (Jharrel Jerome), a young Black man living in California who just so happens to be 13ft tall. Of course, being a giant isn’t easy, and his legal guardians Aunt Lafrancine (Carmen Ejogo) and Uncle Martisse (Mike Epps) have both hidden him from the outside world to protect him. Things are upended with a group of teenagers discover him, and he’s suddenly thrust into society, trying to fit in and experience a normal life with people his age. The show becomes a coming of age comedy as he makes new friends and even falls in love. Directed by Sorry to Bother You’s Boots Riley, the show also stars Walton Goggins, Bretty Gray and Kara Young.

The Idol

The most controversial series of the year? HBO’s The Idol has been a while coming, but finally debuted at the Cannes festival to much anticipation and hype for its envelope-pushing nature. Created by and starring Abel Tesfaye (aka The Weeknd), it focuses on the difficult relationship between a pop idol recovering from a mental breakdown (Lily-Rose Depp) and the self-help guru, Tedros, who she turns to for help (Tesfaye). As she tries to restart her career, she’s coaxed into the modern-day cult that Tedros is the leader of. The no-holds-barred, off-the-rails plot involves a lot of graphic sex and profanity and is co-created by Euphoria’s Sam Levinson. It also features Suzanna Son, Dan Levy, Eli Roth, Rachel Sennott, Hari Nef and Da’Vine Joy Randolph.

And Just Like That… 

Season two of Sex and the City follow up And Just Like That reunites us once again with Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) and Charlotte (Kristin Davis). Picking up where the first season left off, Carrie is moving on with her life and looking for love after the death of her husband Mr. Big. The big plot point for longtime SATC fans is the return to town of Aidan Shaw (John Corbett), Carrie’s former flame and once her fiancé. They certainly seem to be heading towards ending up back together, but how long can it last? As she busies herself with Aidan and her new podcast, Miranda continues to explore her relationship with Che Diaz (Sara Ramirez), and Charlotte becomes obsessed with something called “The MILF List”. Sarita Choudhury, Mario Cantone, Evan Handler, Alexa Swinton also star, while Kim Cattrall’s Samantha remains MIA.

The Bear

One of 2022’s most critically acclaimed shows, The Bear is back for a second helping this month on Disney+. Following the makeover and then closure of his family’s Italian beef sandwich shop, Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) is preparing to launch his new restaurant The Bear. Things might be on the up for him and his staff, but a new business comes with new challenges. His kitchen team are now having to get used to a whole new level of cooking and pressure, and you can expect more of the tense, stressful viewing of season one in these ten new episodes. Regulars from last season like Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Ayo Edebiri, Abby Elliot and Lionel Boyce will all be returning, and Better Call Saul star Bob Odenkirk is appearing in a guest role.

Hijack

If your plane is getting hijacked, hardman Idris Elba is someone you’d want on your flight. That’s the premise of Apple TV+’s intense new miniseries Hijack, which sees the Luther star play a businessman, Sam, who’s put to the test when his Dubai to London flight is taken over. His life and the lives of everyone else on board are at risk, and Sam is forced to use the negotiation skills that he’s made a career out of to try and negotiate his way to safety. Written by Lupin writer George Kay, this edge-of-your-seat thriller runs in a real-time, hour-per-episode format. As the clock continues to tick and authorities on the ground scramble to help, Sam’s high risk strategy might just backfire. Archie Panjabi, Eve Myles, Max Beesley and Neil Maskell also star.

Take Care of Maya

Netflix has become known for engrossing documentaries on a variety of subjects, and their new two-hour docufilm Take Care of Maya is a powerful and thought-provoking watch. It follows the story of nine-year-old Maya Kowalski, who was admitted to hospital in 2016 for serious stomach pains. What she and her family didn’t realise is that she actually had a rare condition, complex regional pain syndrome, and was in urgent need of medical care. But the doctor team, led by Dr. Sally Smith, believes her circumstances to be suspicious and accuse Maya’s mother, Beata, of being neglectful and abusive, and take Maya into custody. The documentary features interviews with Maya’s family as their recount their experiences following her separation and the flawed rigidity of childcare in the US.
